Persimmon Benefits: A Fall Fruit Must Have.

Persimmon benefits are surprisingly awesome. Did you know that the Persimmon is Japan’s national fruit? Well.. you do now. Growing up we had a persimmon tree that had these funny little orange fruits about the size of a ping pong ball. I have fond memories of my dad telling me how much deer loved them and that if you cut them open, the seed of the persimmon would show if there was winter snow coming. It wasn’t until I found the plum sized ones at Whole Foods to really appreciate them for all their value. NOW, I love them even more for their nutritional value.

There come in a plethora of varieties. The vitamin A content is about 50% making it a rockstar. Persimmons offer vitamin C, manganese, fiber, and B complex vitamins. Persimmons are great little low calorie and fat containing gems that possess a large amount of phytonutrients. Although phytonutrients aren’t essential for life.. they do assist in disease prevention and optimal functioning. Besides phytonutrients, flavonoids, and antioxidants are found and they have have anti-inflammatory properties. Keep an eye out for the anti-inflammation post later this week! Persimmons orange/yellow hue illustrates some of the powerful antioxidants found in them. These include beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein.

What are some of the persimmon benefits?

  • helps reduce high blood pressure, even assists in preventing it
  • soothes the stomach, decreases bloating and constipation
  • high in antioxidants that help neutralize toxins and free radicals
  • contains diuretic properties with the potassium and calcium content
  • hight in vitamin C, relieves flu symptoms
  • contains Pectin which stabilizes blood sugar and prevent that afternoon crash and sugar cravings.

In many of my baked goods, I love to incorporate the Hachiya variety. In salads, soups, and even as a quick snack, I prefer to peel and eat the Fuyu variety. The health benefits are evident and the taste is delicious. Comment down below to tell me your favorite or any recipes YOU would love to see with persimmons!
